Volvo adds tire blowout mitigation to dynamic steering system

Volvo Trucks has added a new safety function to its Volvo Dynamic Steering (VDS) system in Europe, that is designed to detect a front tire puncture and automatically mitigate the impact by assisting the driver to keep the truck on a steady course.

The system reduces the side forces that a sudden loss of tire air pressure can create in the case of a flat tire, according to a news release.

Volvo claims that the system detects the puncture and resulting air loss within milliseconds and automatically provides steering support to reduce the side forces caused by the blowout, helping the truck maintain its lane position. The update is initially available on Volvo’s European FH, FH Aero, FM, and FMX models. There’s now word yet if or when it will be added to its North American safety system.

“A flat tire can easily cause a truck to suddenly veer to the side and the consequences can be fatal,” said Anna Wrige Berling, traffic safety director at Volvo Trucks. “This innovation improves safety for drivers and surrounding road users and makes our Volvo Dynamic Steering system better than ever.”

Volvo Dynamic Steering was first introduced in 2013 and has since evolved to support both emergency and everyday driving scenarios. The system can reduce steering effort by up to 75% at low speeds and compensates for road unevenness, crosswinds, and skidding tendencies.
