Volvo I-Torque combining fuel economy, performance

Volvo’s D13 Turbo Compound engines are now available with the optional I-Torque – combining the I-Shift transmission with overdrive features, an adaptive gear shift strategy, a new map-based version of the predictive I-See cruise control, and rear axle ratios as low as 2.15.

The end result, Volvo says, increases the fuel-efficient speed range up to 31%, and would deliver up to 8.5 miles per gallon at 85 mph (27.6723 L/100 km at 137 km/h).

The system selects direct drive or overdrive to maximize fuel efficiency without forfeiting performance, the OEM says.

The I-Torque configuration uses a 13-speed I-Shift with crawler gear, combining the fuel-efficiency of direct drive with overdrive performance. Equipped trucks select direct drive or overdrive settings using the I-See cruise control, low rear axle ratios, and load-sensing software.

The D13TC engine is standard in all Volvo VNL sleeper models.
