The joint venture between Westport Fuel Systems and Volvo Group now has a name.

It’ll be called Cespira, as announced at the IAA Transportation show in Hannover, Germany.

“The name Cespira — combining ‘espira,’ meaning ‘breathe out,’ with ‘C’ for ‘clean’ — perfectly embodies our mission and vision,” says Dan Sceli, chief executive officer of the JV. “The turquoise symbol above the ‘i’ in Cespira’s logo is more than just a design choice; it represents our collaboration with Volvo Group and Westport, the integration of established technologies with cutting-edge clean fuel solutions, and the molecular structure of hydrogen, which is central to our mission.

“Moreover, the symbol reflects our ambition to partner with multiple OEMs, expanding the reach and impact of the joint venture. Our goal is to be a trusted collaborator and partner for all stakeholders in the industry. Collaboration is at the core of everything we do, and it’s through these partnerships that we will lead the way toward true decarbonization.”

Cespira is looking to commercialize high-pressure direct injection internal combustion engines, that can be fueled by clean energy sources including hydrogen.

“The launch of Cespira manifests our joint venture with Westport Fuel Systems,” said Lars Stenqvist, chief technology officer of Volvo Group.

“The HPDI technology is important for decarbonization, offering immediate reductions in greenhouse gas emissions while utilizing existing internal combustion engines. This can be achieved today with biogas and natural gas, and we foresee exciting possibilities with hydrogen. With Cespira, we are well-positioned to continue leading the industry toward a more sustainable future and we look forward to seeing other OEMs explore this technology.”
