Aussie will try to tow 120 trailers for world record

CLIFTON, Australia (July 14, 2005) — Australian trucker John Atkinson will attempt to reclaim a record he helped set in 2003 by pulling the world’s longest road train with a single power unit.

According to a press release from self-described organizer Mick Boyce, “at midday on the 18th of February 2006 at Clifton (Australia) on the Darling Downs an attempt to break the World Record for the world’s longest road train with a single prime mover as per Guinness World Records rules will be made.”

Combination units consisting of half a dozen or so coupled trailers are not an unusual sight Down Under, but Atkinson will attempt to tow 120 trailers (at 1800 metres long) for more than 100 metres in a brand new tri-drive Mack Titan supplied by Mack Trucks Australia.

Tires will be supplied by Bridgestone Tires and the “turn table” by Holland Hitch, says the press release.

“Fill in entertainment will keep spectators attention while the road train is being assembled,” according to the release.
