PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. — In an attempt to mitigate the high number of trucking-related injuries and fatalities among log haulers in B.C.’s Northern Interior, WorkSafe B.C. is proposing a series of changes to provincial safety regulations.

WorkSafe B.C. , formerly the Workers’ Compensation Board, will consult with stakeholders who have until Jan. 31 to provide feedback on the proposed amendments, which includes clarifying the lines of responsibility on at work sites, and improving rules for mechanized logging and log trucking, the Prince George Citizen reports.

In particular, a new proposal was included that every forestry road must be designed by an appropriately qualified professional engineer, geo-scientist or professional forester to meet a standard that permits the safe transportation of person, logs or other forest products by any vehicles on the road.

The highest number of forestry deaths (43) in 20 years were recorded in 2005, many involving truckers.
