N.S. transport minister to give up portfolio

HALIFAX, (July 7, 2005) — Nova Scotia Transportation Minister and Deputy Premier Ron Russell has decided to relax his workload in order to recover from cancer surgery.

The Halifax Daily News reports that Russell, 78, will temporarily step aside as transportation minister before the next provincial election while he recovers from surgery to remove a tumour. He will remain deputy premier and government house leader.

Justice Minister Michael Baker will fill in at Transportation and Public Works while Russell recovers.

Russell was first elected as part of John Buchanan’s first government in 1978. He has served as Speaker three times in his career and headed seven different departments.
