ATRI seeks motor carriers for study on rising insurance costs

The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) is seeking motor carriers to participate in research on rising insurance costs and managing risk.

ATRI said trucking liability premiums rose by 36% per mile in the past eight years, even as truck crashes declined over the past four years.

After previously studying how fleets were investing in safety technologies, reducing coverage, and raising deductibles in search of savings, ATRI now hopes to better understand industry-wide trends in the ongoing effectiveness of these strategies.

In 2025, insurance cost and availability, and lawsuit abuse, a primary contributor to rising insurance costs, were voted as the third and second most challenging issues facing the trucking industry, respectively.

Developing a framework for potential upfront insurance premium reductions when drivers and carriers adopt proven safety technologies was the top strategy suggested by survey respondents.

Motor carriers are requested to submit data for the years 2021-2024, along with information on their use of safety technology. Motor carriers can complete the survey by PDF or online. The deadline is Dec. 19 and all data is kept confidential for analysis in aggregate form only.
