Unified Registration System rollout delayed three months

WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is delaying the rollout of a simplified online registration system until January 14, 2017, adding three months to an original September 30 deadline.

Full compliance of this Unified Registration System (URS) will begin April 14, 2017.

The agency cited the challenge of updating Information Technology systems, as it shifts millions of records to cloud-based storage servers.

“The 2013 URS final rule was issued to improve the registration process for motor carriers, property brokers, freight forwarders, Intermodal Equipment Providers, hazardous materials safety permit applicants, and cargo tank facilities required to register with FMCSA, and streamline the existing federal registration processes to ensure the agency can more efficiently track these entities,” the agency says.

The first phase of URS was launched in December 2015, and in the first six months the industry saved about US $1.6 million (Cdn $2 million) in processing times, it adds. So far FMCSA has issued 62,000 USDOT numbers, removed 340,000 dormant USDOT numbers from agency databases, and screened every operating authority application for “reincarnated” carriers.
