On the Spot: Mack’s Grade Gripper

We put the turn signal on. We’ve actually got a side camera here above the mirror because it’s a view down to the right-hand side of the truck. It’s a nice safety feature.

Okay. So, grade gripper time.

We’re going to go up this,  20% grade and go up to the top where the cone is, and I’ll explain how the grade gripper has been updated.

Coming up to the traffic cone, put the brake on pretty full application, take my foot off the brake.

Previously, this was designed to give the driver enough time to get his or her foot from the accelerator pedal over to the brake pedal before the truck rolled back.

Now, the grade gripper will hold the truck for up to a minute and forty-five seconds.

If you don’t provide any brake or throttle input in that minute forty-five seconds, the grade gripper will shut the truck down and apply the parking brakes.

So, now we’re going to take off. So just apply a little bit of accelerator and pulls right away.

That’ll work to any load up to 80,000 lbs as well.

So, we’re on the top of this little hill. I’m going to stop on the down grade here and see what the great gripper does in the forward direction. So same idea. Both my feet are flat on the floor. My feet are not on the brakes. I’m still in gear, technically. Shows me in fourth gear.

But obviously, we’re not going anywhere.

So as soon as I touch the accelerator pedal, brakes release, and away she rolls.
