Zero In on…Charging-as-a-service

Zeem Solutions is expanding its electric vehicle charging infrastructure for class 8 drayage fleets in Southern California and New Jersey, with new sites planned at the ports of Long Beach, Calif., and Newark, N.J.

At the Port of Long Beach, Zeem has broken ground on a 2.7-acre location. The facility will feature 84 fast chargers capable of fully charging up to 500 trucks per day. Operating 24/7, the depot is expected to begin operations in early 2025.

Rick Eckert, vice-president of operations at Zeem: At that location, we’ll have 15 megawatts to start, and we’ll be able to accommodate 280 Class 8 trucks per night, with an additional 200 to 250 opportunity charging capacity during the day, with a plan to grow to 30 megawatts and increase that number to around 700 trucks per day as the population of EV grows around the port.

In Newark, however, phase 1 operations are scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025. The facility will provide overnight parking and charging for 200 trucks, with additional charging capacity for up to 300 electric vehicles during the day.

Rick Eckert: Similar to Long Beach, we’re opening up [in] Newark, New Jersey at the port, where we’ll be doing an additional 250 trucks overnight with 30 megawatts available. And look to grow up to about 800 vehicles in a 24 hour period, also running 24/7 with the same ancillary services, where we’ll do maintenance, safety inspections, charging, parking, washing, whatever it takes to get the customers back on the road.

Zeem already operates two charging depots in Inglewood, Calif. The first site includes 26 dual-port fast chargers positioned around the perimeter, in addition to 18 Level 2 chargers. Meanwhile, the second location features 10 dual-port fast chargers, plus  five smaller 30-kilowatt chargers, with an additional 32 Level 2 chargers spread throughout the property.

The company says its fixed-fee approach eliminates the operational and financial burdens of building and managing EV infrastructure.

Rick Eckert: Of the benefits of working with Zeem is we basically handle everything from soup to nuts for your driver. So the drivers come in, they park their personal vehicles. We have their Class 8  vehicles charge ready. We handle all the maintenance. We do twice a month, washes. Basically, we’ll check for any safety related items before your driver gets here. So it makes it really turnkey and easy for the customer to run daily operations out of our locations with very limited interruptions. So, our facilities offer up opportunity charging for our customers. So you can come in here, park your vehicle. While you’re waiting what the vehicle charges, we have lounge access where you can sit down, recharge your phone, use the restrooms, grab water, grab coffee, take a lunch. While your vehicle is charging, you see on our dashboard where your vehicle is in the queue, and you know when it’s done. And by the time it’s finished, we pull it up for you, and then your driver’s back on their way.
