U.S. troops will soon monitor border crossings

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Pentagon announced on Friday that U.S. soldiers will soon be patrolling the Canada-U.S. border in an effort to shore up border security.

About 1,600 soldiers will be deployed to help patrol the border, working alongside U.S. immigration, customs and border patrol agencies. Some of the troops will be sent south to monitor the U.S.-Mexico border as well.

Immigration officials are still deciding when the troops will be deployed to help out at the border.

U.S. officials still insist that this is a temporary measure, which will help buy some time for the implementation of new border security professionals and technology. In Canada, however, there is concern that this move will signify the end of the world’s longest undefended border, and tie up truck traffic into the U.S.
