VANCOUVER, B.C. — TransLink is examining an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), which may utilize new technology for everything from toll payments to tracking of goods.

The system being considered would be modeled after similar systems in Tokyo and Japan, where ITS plays a major role because of the lack of space for more roads.

"It’s a critical component of our overall transportation plan," says TransLink chair, Doug McCallum.

Ideally, according to McCallum, an ITS system would allow the province to get the most from its existing transportation infrastructure, saving the cost of building more highways.

While the first ITS components implemented would likely involve electronic fare collection for transit users, other idea being considered will affect the trucking industry. ITS technology could be used for toll collections, road safety improvements and the tracking of goods movements.

McCallum promises TransLink will not forge ahead with any costly implementations without determining their worth and cost.

"The concepts are good, but we have to be sure the public agrees with it and understands the cost," he says.
