Canada, U.S. to share railway grade crossing information
OTTAWA, Ont. — Canada and the U.S. have inked a deal that will see both nations share railway grade crossing research information.
Canada’s Transportation Development Centre (TDC) and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) will work together for three years in examining railway grade crossings.
"This agreement allows Canada and the U.S. to exchange information, benefit from each other’s research and knowledge and cooperate on specific research projects," says Canadian Transport Minister, David Collenette. "By working together, we’ll be able to improve the safety and cost-effectiveness of grade crossing systems through technological, operational and human factor research."
Part of the goal of the partnership is to reduce duplication in research. TDC has been involved in highway-railway grade crossing research since 1999 and aims to reduce the number of grade crossing collisions and railway trespassing incidents by 50 per cent by 2006.
