Road crews ask drivers to slow down
EDMONTON, Alta. — As summer road crews take to Alberta’s highways, the province’s road builders are appealing to truckers and motorists to heed the signs and slow down in construction zones.
“It isn’t always obvious why signs are posted when construction crews aren’t working, but there are many hidden hazards on a construction site,” says Allan Lowe, Alberta Roadbuilders and Heavy Construction Association president. “Construction signs stay up until all work is complete to maximize safety for the travelling public. Please be patient, slow down and obey all construction zone signs and flag persons.”
Alberta Transportation will be using pilot vehicles to guide drivers through chip seal coating construction zones to help avoid the risk of damaged windshields.
This summer, about $260 million is being spent on highway improvement projects in Alberta. Paving, grading, chip seal coating and bridge and interchange construction are among the more common projects.
