650 truck assembly jobs at risk
CHATHAM, Ont. — The management of Navistar International Corp. says it may close its southwestern Ontario heavy truck assembly plant next year.
Navistar says the plant lost more than $10 million last year, partially due to a six-week strike at the plant. Currently, the operation consists of one shift with 650 workers and producing 60 trucks every day.
The plant is Chatham’s biggest industrial employer and has been a business fixture in the community since the 1920s.
If Navistar closes this plant, they would consolidate three operations in the U.S. and one in Mexico. The company board meetings are to begin this week.
