VICTORIA, B.C. — Crown Corporation, B.C. Ferries, is no more and in its place is the privately-owned and run B.C. Ferry Services Inc.

The transition was created to enable the company to become a more customer-focused and financially-viable business, says the province’s Transportation Minister, Judith Reid.

"The new company will have the flexibility and independence to improve customer service, provide choice and develop strategic partnerships with the private sector. The changes we are embarking on today have been long overdue and will mark an end to the political interference that plagued the corporation in the past," says Reid.

The province has a 60-year agreement in place with the company to ensure existing routes and service levels are maintained for the time being. They can be renegotiated every four years.

There’s also a price cap provision which will only allow the privately-run B.C. Ferry Services to increase ferries over four- and five-year terms.
