TORONTO, Ont. – Ontario Provincial Police are crediting a delayed start to winter for a 27% drop in collisions on the provinces highways so far this season, the Toronto Star reports.

Between Dec. 1 and Jan. 21, the OPP reported 12,369 collisions, compared with 16,896 during the same period last year. By the end of last January, OPP say Ontarios two-month total for highway accidents was more than 19,000, making it difficult for that total to be reached again this year.

However highway deaths across the province have actually been slightly higher than the same period the winter before, with 53 fatalities this year and 52 during the same period last winter.
