TORONTO, Ont. — Ontario is giving fresh consideration to banning cell phones and other electronic devices while driving, according to a report.

The law could even include GPS systems and other devices, according to a report in the Toronto Star.

“I know what they’ve done in other provinces and other states: they’ve just dealt with one item, the cellphone,” Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty was quoted as saying by the Toronto Star. “What about the next gadget that they haven’t invented yet?”

Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Quebec have moved to ban the use of handheld cell phones while driving in recent months. According to the report, McGuinty has asked Transport Minister Jim Bradley to examine implementing a “next-generation legislation” which would be much broader and encompass all kinds of items that cause driver distraction.

“I talk to the police and they say … there’s more than just one item (distracting drivers). I’ve asked Bradley to take a look to see if there’s something we might do, which deals with distractors generally, and I think in particular, electronic distractors,” McGuinty told the Star.
