CAW slams feds for truck deal with Navistar
OTTAWA, Ont. — The Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) has slammed the federal government for awarding a $254 million military truck contract to Navistar, as the company continues to lay off workers at its Chatham, Ont. plant, according to a report in the Toronto Star.
About 1,300 military trucks will be built at Navistar’s Texas plant, under the agreement.
“Somebody has to explain to us why Canadian workers can’t build military trucks for the Canadian military,” senior CAW executive Bob Chernecki, told the Toronto Star.
A Navistar spokesman responded by pointing out the Chatham line is designed to build heavy-duty trucks and could not be altered to accommodate the production of military trucks.
