Saskatchewan hikes vehicle registration fees

REGINA, (March 31, 2004) — The cash-strapped government of Saskatchewan is hiking vehicle registration rates for most vehicle operators this summer — with truckers feeling the toughest pinch.

While fees for passenger cars will jump $10 to $68, the price will increase anywhere from five to 30 percent for about 8,000 commercial trucks. It is the first time in a decade Saskatchewan Government Insurance has hiked registration fees.

Also, starting July 1, 2005, all heavy farm trailers over 4,600 kilograms must be registered. Currently, only semi-trailers and gooseneck farm trailers must be registered. SGI will also start including the gross weight of heavy farm trailers in the calculation of the registration fee for the truck pulling the trailer.

The increased rates will reportedly generate $4.5 million for the government.
