LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Seeing Machines says its Guardian safety system is significantly helping to reduce distracted driving and fatigue, and that Royal Food Service will be equipping its fleet with the system.
“The Guardian safety solution is already saving truck drivers’ lives internationally, and now we’re positioned to better protect US fleet operators and surrounding highway users by addressing distracted driving and fatigue in real-time, preventing accidents before they happen,” said Ken Kroeger, CEO of Seeing Machines. “The preliminary US data is consistent with what we’ve seen around the world in fleets that are already relying on Guardian to better safeguard their drivers, improve their safety culture and protect their brand.”
During the American Trucking Associations’ Management Conference and Exhibition (MCE), Seeing Machines released data accumulated from three different fleets showing that microsleep events were reduced by 100%, 75% and 71%; cellphone-related distraction events by 100%, 97% and 77%; and distraction events at high speeds down by 83%, 49% and 43%.
“We care about our drivers and want to make sure each one gets home safely every day,” said Mark McClendon, CFO of Royal Food Service. “Even though our drivers and equipment are among the best on-the-road, we still saw a 70% to 90% or higher reduction in distracted driving and fatigue events during the assessment. We are confident this technology will further strengthen our safety culture, protect our drivers and improve highway safety overall.”
Guardian monitors the driver’s face to determine microsleep or distracted driving events and provides an intervention, such as a vibration, to notify the driver and bring their attention back to the road.
Guardian was released in North America early 2016, with numerous assessments in Canada and the US.
Seeing Machines said the Guardian system is driver focused, as it does not record and disclose video unless a microsleep or other distracted event occurs.
Seeing Machines focuses on deploying its computer vision and intelligent sensing technologies in mining and commercial road transport applications, as well as aerospace, automotive, rail and ophthalmic medicine.
