TLG Peterbilt donates electric 579EV to Pittsburg State University
The Larson Group (TLG) Peterbilt has donated a new Peterbilt Model 579EV to Pittsburg State University, giving students hands-on experience with battery-electric Class 8 truck technology.
The all-electric tractor will be integrated into the university’s Diesel and Heavy Equipment program within its automotive and engineering technology department. Faculty say the truck will support training in high-voltage battery systems, electric drivetrains, charging infrastructure, thermal management, and advanced diagnostics.

“By giving our students access to the newest commercial EV technology, this donation ensures graduates are prepared with skills that employers are urgently seeking,” said Tim Dell, professor and leader of the Diesel & Heavy Equipment program.
TLG Peterbilt’s director of new truck sales, Jeff Venning, said the donation will give students a rare opportunity to work directly on a production electric Class 8 vehicle.
“This truck will allow students to completely disassemble and reassemble the vehicle, gaining real-world experience with cutting-edge technology that is shaping the future of transportation,” he said.
By incorporating a production electric semi into its curriculum, the program aims to better prepare students for a rapidly evolving commercial vehicle landscape as fleets begin adding zero-emission equipment to their operations. Industry observers note that as electrification advances, demand is growing for technicians trained in high-voltage systems, EV safety protocols, and advanced vehicle software — areas traditional diesel programs are increasingly expanding to address.
