Alberta’s first Flying J truck stop now open
EDMONTON, Alta. – Flying J and Shell Canada opened their first co-branded truck stop and travel plaza in Alberta June 7.
The new truck stop is located on 20 acres of land just east of Edmonton in Sherwood Park, Alta. on the Yellowhead Highway.
A second co-branded truck stop and travel plaza is under development in Calgary, Alta. on Barlow Trail S.E. It is scheduled to open in December 2005.
Shell Canada has been the official fuel supplier to Flying J truck stops in Canada since 1998.
In 2003, the company teamed with TCH and Irving Oil to launch a new fleet fuelling card called FP Solutions.
The Sherwood Park truck stop is the fourth Flying J to open in Canada, bringing the total number to 169 in North America.
The new truck stop is now open 24 hours a day, officials say.
“There’s nothing like this in the area!” said convenience store manager of the new Sherwood Park location, Lyndon Baines. “The new plaza employs 110 people, boasts a full-service Country Market Restaurant and Buffet, seating 150 guests and offering casual dining, a fast food court as well as an ‘all-you-can-eat’ buffet.”
The new stop also features a theatre style drivers’ lounge with a big screen TV and interactive games room.
Private phone booths and laundry facilities are also be available for drivers and nine secure shower rooms makes it easy for drivers to freshen up before hitting the road.
Flying J officials also say kiosks are available to provide fax and copy services, trip routing and mileage reports and load matching capabilities.
Calibrated J-Scales are also available so drivers can weigh their loads and avoid costly fines. The truck stop has parking for up to 140 tractor-trailers.
