AMTA presents annual awards (November 01, 2002)

EDMONTON, Alta. – The Alberta Motor Transport Association (AMTA) took the chance to recognize some of its finest members at its recent conference in Edmonton.

The Volvo Driver of the Year was Irvin Duncan of Chinook Carriers.

Gene Orlick of Orlick Transport was named Safety Person of the Year while Ken Edwards received the Historical Award.

Elaine Cherwoniak of Waterous Detroit Diesel Allison received the Associate Trades Award with Andrew Blasetti of Bighorn Transport taking home Trailmobile’s /Service to Industry Award.

The AMTA conference was held Sept. 27-28, and featured special guest Jay Ramotar, Alberta’s deputy transportation minister.

He addressed Hours-of-Service and the National Safety Code weight thresholds.

Ramotar told attendees Alberta is considering adopting a separate vehicle weight threshold of 11,794kg for intraprovincial carriers.

That compares to the 4,500kg interprovincial threshold enforced by all provinces and territories.
