OTTAWA, Ont. – Transport Canada has announced plans to draft legislation to create the Transportation Appeal Tribunal of Canada, a quasi-judicial tribunal that would review enforcement actions taken against the air, marine and rail sectors.

The independent body would arbitrate enforcement decisions, replacing the existing internal review processes in which inspectors’ enforcement decisions are reviewed by senior officials or the minister.

“The proposed multi-modal tribunal would be an expansion of the Civil Aviation Tribunal, which performs review and appeal functions for the aviation industry, and enjoys a high level of industry satisfaction,” said Transport Minister David Collenette. n
