ATA petitions EPA on diesel deadline (August 01, 2002)
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The American Trucking Associations (ATA) has filed a petition for reconsideration with the EPA trying to push back the October deadline for new North American emissions standards.
The petition cites new information on reliability and maintenance issues, as well as energy impacts and life-cycle costs. ATA is urging the environmental agency to take a second look at its rule.
The 2004 rule was incorporated into consent decrees signed by engine makers in 1998, moving the deadline forward to October 2002.
“The new information makes it clear that EPA’s original estimates of the costs and benefits of the rule are inaccurate,” ATA says in a statement. “If EPA fails to address the dramatic cost increases that will be associated with the 2004 Rule, the negative impact on the trucking industry will be felt throughout the nation’s economy,” ATA argued.
