CHURCHILL, Man. – Former Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister, Lloyd Axworthy, is heading a new business council aimed at resurrecting the struggling Port of Churchill.

The Churchill Gateway Development Corporation will develop a long-term plan for the northern port while trying to find markets for new commodities such as fertilizer and container goods.

It also aims to increase the supplies headed for Nunavut through the port. Axworthy told local media the port must stop relying solely on grain transportation if it is to survive. He, and the council will explore options to expand tourism, research and trade sectors of the northern port.
