VICTORIA, B.C. – B.C. has announced an Asia-Pacific Gateway Strategy aimed at increasing trade ties between B.C. and Asia.
“We have a golden opportunity to become North America’s foremost crossroads to the Asia-Pacific,” premier Gordon Campbell said during his recent throne speech.
“B.C.’s role as the nation’s Pacific gateway, our multicultural society, the diversity and wealth of First Nations cultures, B.C.’s world-class education and research capacity, and the province’s transportation and trade infrastructure give us a strategic advantage over every other province and allow us to lead the way in accessing the growing economic opportunities in the Asia-Pacific.”
The Asia-Pacific Gateway Strategy includes the following initiatives:
Formation of an Asia-Pacific Trade Council to advise government on how to target resources;
A network of key B.C. Trade and Cultural Centres will be established in international markets to promote “made in B.C.” products;
A B.C. Competition Council will keep tabs on the province’s competitiveness;
New and expanded transportation links to the Pacific through the Port of Prince Rupert and Port of Vancouver.
“Our Asia-Pacific Gateway Strategy will take B.C. products to the world and open doors for new cultural exchange, new relationships, and new partnerships in education,” Campbell said.
