VANCOUVER, B.C. – The Province of B.C. is investing $2.4 million to improve more than 100 rest areas along the province’s highways.

More than 150 students are being hired this summer to: upgrade washroom facilities; upgrade two rest areas to provide year-round access; install power where access is available; and install liquid hand sanitizers where water isn’t available.

“As we lead up to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, our aim is to ensure our visitors are receiving gold medal service throughout B.C., including our provincial rest stops,” said Transportation Minister, Kevin Falcon. “As part of the program, 152 students will gain valuable work experience in their communities this summer.”

He added road safety will be improved as drivers will have better facilities at which to pull over to rest.

“Our highways are among the very best anywhere, and the scenery and views across this province are unmatched. Now, we want to make sure our highway rest areas are equally impressive,” said Falcon.
