Let EBS stand alone: Kenworth

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – If it’s good enough for Europe, it should be good enough for North America.

That’s the message Kenworth is taking to the U.S. Department of Transportation as it tries to convince regulators to allow Electronic Braking Systems, known as brake-by-wire, without a second air-based system running along side them.

“You don’t have to have a redundant system,” insists Ed Caudill, general manager of Kenworth.

The company was showcasing an EBS system combined with disc brakes on its Technology Truck during the Mid-America Trucking Show.

But where such systems can stand alone in European trucks, such as Paccar’s DAF models, they need an air-based backup in North America. n
