BURNABY, B.C. – Burnaby-based Ballard Power Systems is laying off 220 workers worldwide in a major workplace shuffle.

Vice-president of finance, Paul Lancaster, says “This is not about retraction, this is about bringing together other businesses.”

Only 80 of those receiving pink slips work in the company’s Lower Mainland operations. The remaining laid off workers are based out of Germany.

Ballard has been gobbling up business interests quite rapidly over the past months, which has necessitated the layoffs.

The company is developing electric fuel cells, and Lancaster admits more layoffs could be in store for the future.
