BIG Transportation Media Research, our research division, partnered with Shaw Tracking (formerly Cancom Tracking) to produce the first annual Shipper-Carrier Issues Roundtable in November. Participants in the roundtable, moderated by editorial director Lou Smyrlis, included Dan Einwechter, president Challenger Motor Freight; Serge Gagnon, president XTL Transport; Neil McKenna, director transportation operations, Canadian Tire Retail; Julie Tanguay, president L.E. Transportation Media Research also completed its third annual Transportation Buying Trends survey, which polled more than 700 shippers across Canada on issues such as expected shipment volumes for 2007, capacity concerns by mode as well as rates and surcharges by mode. Presentations on the results will be scheduled at industry events throughout the year.

Meanwhile, editorial director Lou Smyrlis provided the closing remarks at the strongly-attended 20th Annual Transportation Innovation and Cost Savings Conference in Mississauga, Ont. and led the main session at CITT’s annual conference held in Saint John, N.B.

That session examined global logistics and the impact on Canadian infrastructure. Panelists included: Wesley Armour, president and CEO, Armour Transportation Systems; Fred Green, president and CEO, Canadian Pacific Railway; John Murphy, vice president, Irving Transportation Services, Dr. Mary Brooks, professor, marketing and transportation, Dalhousie University; Holger Oetjen, managing director, Hapag Lloyd (Canada) Inc.; and Captain Al Soppitt, president and CEO, Saint John Port Authority.

Smyrlis also presented the results of BIG Transportation Media’s latest survey on Canadian outsourcing trends at a special breakfast organized by Supply Chain & Logistics Canada (SCL). The survey is conducted in partnership with Ryder Canada, SCL and The Logistics Institute.

Finally, Smyrlis spoke to Centennial College students about trends in transportation and is scheduled to present the results of our first annual Driver Satisfaction Survey, conducted in partnership with Michelin North America (Canada) Inc. and the Canadian Trucking Human Resources Council, at an industry gathering in December.
