LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems says initial performance data shows its prototype ADB 225 Air Disc Brake reduces stopping distances by as much as 39 per cent.

Bendix, noting that that stopping distance is 30 per cent shorter than the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2007 target, adds the ADB 225 is designed for 22.5-in. wheels and is the first disc brake designed specifically for North America.

As an example, the company explains that a truck with a gross vehicle weight of 56,470 lbs., traveling at 60 mph., “will stop 140 ft. shorter than current regulations require.”

The company notes that the new unit, to be released in 2003, features a mono block caliper design, which differs from the European two-piece caliper model currently available on this continent. It also notes the ADB 225 is “up to 10 per cent” lighter than drum brakes.

The ADB 225 also reduces hysteresis “to less than 10 per cent by applying brake pressure evenly and efficiently to all wheels. This feature improves in-lane braking stability and provides an overall smoother ride, resulting in a passenger-car like feel.” n
