DALLAS, Texas – Bison Transport joined a list of 13 carriers honoured by the US Environmental Protection Agency’s inaugural SmartWay Excellence Awards for improving business and the environment at the same time.

Established in 2004, EPA’s SmartWay Transport program is a way for companies and organizations to address the environmental impacts of freight transport. Including shippers, logistics companies and affiliate members, 24 participants were presented with the first-time SmartWay Excellence Awards on Oct. 30 during the American Trucking Associations management conference and exhibition in Dallas.

These awards recognize freight industry leaders that have made significant contributions to protecting the environment through their participation in the partnership.

Carriers commit to integrate innovative cost-sharing strategies, such as idle reduction technologies, into their fleet operations. Shippers commit to ship at least 50% of their goods with SmartWay Transport carriers. Logistic partners act as intermediaries for shipper and carriers; and their role is to inspire fleets that they manage to join the partnership. Affiliate partners help spread the word and encourage participation in SmartWay.

Bison, headquartered in Winnipeg, was recognized for combining effective equipment purchasing decisions with innovative training techniques to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption.

Bison takes a three-prong approach to training: computer-based modules, classroom instruction, and state-of-the-art full motion simulation. Through this training, the company has improved fuel economy by 3%. In addition to driver training, Bison uses idling control, tractor and trailer aerodynamics, weight reduction strategies, speed management, and engine upgrades to boost fuel efficiency.

The selection of SmartWay Excellence Award winners was based on actual emissions reductions and fuel savings achieved compared to the organization’s overall fuel consumption and emissions, the types and variety of strategies and technologies implemented, and the overall environmental performance of the organization.
