Calgary alderman complains about engine brakes

CALGARY, Alta. – A Calgary alderman is calling on the city to quadruple fines for truck drivers who use their engine retarder brakes within the city limits.

Ald. Craig Burrows says he’s received many calls from residents complaining about the use of engine retarder brakes, especially at night.

“I’ve had lots of complaints about guys using retarder brakes in the city, even though it’s against our bylaws,” Burrows told local media.

The current fine for using engine retarder brakes in the city is $250. Burrows would like to see that hiked to $1,000 and he also wants the city to step up enforcement.

“Maybe we have to pull them over randomly,” he suggested. “For $1,000, they might think twice about using the brakes in the city.”
