Calgary wraps up enforcement blitz

CALGARY, Alta. – Just before RoadCheck, the Calgary police department decided to get some early practice under its belt with a recent transport enforcement blitz. The Calgary Police Truck Unit and other agencies across Alberta stopped approximately 400 commercial drivers between May 27 and 29 throughout the city. More than 353 commercial vehicles of all sizes were checked for driver qualification, load securement, mechanical condition and dangerous goods.

Ninety of those rigs (25 per cent) were placed out-of-service while 110 trucks (31 per cent) required attention. One hundred and fifty three (44 per cent) of the trucks inspected were completely up to par and passed the inspection. Those results indicate a slightly higher out-of-service rate compared to last year’s crackdown, which saw 24 per cent of trucks temporarily taken off the road. One of the more serious violations was a broken rear axle.
