OTTAWA, Ont. – There are 644,300 tractor trailers and straight trucks in the Canadian market, according to the latest Statistics Canada survey.
The figure reflects a continuing downward revision of the heavy commercial vehicles (weighing at least 4,500 kg) plying our highways. A few years ago the figure was pegged at 700,000 but since then an about 25 per cent thinning in the ranks of small carriers, a 10 per cent reduction in the number of owner/operators and strict emissions controls in Ontario have removed many vehicles from service.
The Statistics Canada survey also reported 4.2 million trailers (commercial and passenger-related) and 1.4 million off-road, construction and farm vehicles.
