TORONTO, Ont. – The Province of Ontario has released its budget, which promises more than $1 billion in highway planning, expansion and rehabilitation in 2003-2004.

Finance Minister, Janet Ecker, made the budget announcement Mar. 27. Also included in the budget was a call for discussions to revisit the multi-jurisdictional vehicle sales tax (MJVT). The province wants to consider extending the MJVT to all heavy commercial vehicles.

The Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) was hoping the MJVT would be revised to address some of the association’s concerns.

“While there may be merit in harmonizing all vehicles under one system, it must lead to an overall reduction in the sales tax burden on the industry,” says OTA president, David Bradley.
