CN adds fuel surcharge

MONTREAL, Que. – Canadian National Railway added a four per cent surcharge on its general cargo shipments, effective Nov. 1.

The inter-modal surcharge could possibly rise as high as six per cent, depending on fuel prices.

Chief executive Paul Tellier said in late October that the company was also considering additional surcharges, to help offset the high cost of fuel.

CN was the last major railway to impose a surcharge because it had hedged its year’s supply of fuel against future price increases, Tellier said. n
