VANCOUVER, B.C. – Canadian National (CN) Railway has expressed interest in purchasing B.C. Rail, should the province decide to sell it.

CN’s chief executive, Hunter Harrison, recently hinted to media that he’d be interested in buying B.C. Rail.

“We’re good at running a railroad and if there is one for sale, we’ll certainly be there,” he said.

B.C.’s provincial government is soon expected to tender a request for proposals to operate B.C. Rail, which runs more than 2,300 kilometres of mainline track in the province. The Crown corporation was re-organized just over a year ago, at which time the railway halted its freight operations and concentrated solely on transporting passengers.

The province has said that even if it sells off Canada’s third largest railway, it will maintain ownership of the rail bed.
