CN workers reject settlement, strike resumes

MONTREAL, Que. – CN says it is bracing for rotating labour action as members of the United Transportation Union (UTU) rejected a settlement.

Reports suggested 79% of UTU workers who voted rejected the settlement. The tentative one-year settlement had brought an apparent end to the two-week long labour dispute on Feb. 24. However, the union said it would renew strike action against the railway if workers refused to ratify the agreement in a recent vote. The UTU represents 2,800 conductors and yard service employees at CN.

“CN is disappointed with the contract rejection announced today by the UTU. We believe the settlement was fair, equitable and consistent with collective agreements the company recently signed with another Canadian union,” announced E. Hunter Harrison, president and CEO of CN. “Our customers must appreciate the fact that CN service levels may be affected by the frequency, location and severity of the UTU’s rotating work actions.”
