OTTAWA, Ont. – Statistics Canada says diesel-fuel sales reached 23.5 million cubic metres last year, a rise of 5.6 per cent over 1999.

The statistics tracker also said demand increased due to greater needs of the transportation sector, as well as increased drilling in the oil and natural gas industry.

It said diesel accounted for 24.8 per cent of total sales of petroleum products in 2000. Overall, sales in 2000 of refined petroleum products, which include propane, butane, asphalt, lubricating oils, stove oil and petroleum coke, were up 1.8 per cent over 1999. n
