QUEEN’S PARK, Ont. – The Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) says it has learned the Ontario Ministry of the Environment (MOE) is set to review the heavy-duty Drive Clean program.

In a letter to OTA, Joan Andrew, MOE assistant deputy minister of the Environmental Sciences and Standards Division, states the ministry, “is committed to reducing smog causing pollutants and particulates from heavy-duty vehicles on Ontario roads and continuous review of the Drive Clean program.”

She goes on to add, “The Heavy Duty Vehicle Program Review will be an important step towards this goal.”

Andrew also explains she, “values (OTA’s) role as a member of the Minister’s Drive Clean Multi-Stakeholder Advisory Council.”

OTA has long held Drive Clean could be made more effective in targeting the gross emitters without forcing newer, cleaner trucks into needless and costly periodic inspections. OTA also wants to see Ontario registered vehicles and out-of-province trucks on a level playing field.
