SEATTLE, Wash. – Dunn Lumber of Seattle is the first company to take delivery of Kenworth’s medium-duty hybrid electric offering.
Kenworth says its medium-duty hybrids can reduce fuel consumption by 30% in stop-and-go applications. It is currently offering hybrids in limited production to municipal and utility fleets and plans to ramp up production next year.
“It’s especially appropriate for Dunn Lumber to receive the first Kenworth hybrid medium-duty truck as the company celebrates its 100th anniversary in business in the Puget Sound area,” said Bob Christensen, Kenworth general manager and PACCAR vice-president.
“Dunn Lumber strives to be an environmental leader and we’re excited to put the new Kenworth medium-duty hybrid into service as a step to help reduce emissions and improve fuel economy,” added Rob Dunn, chief executive officer of Dunn Lumber.
The hybrid operates normally over 30 mph, but switches between diesel and electric modes at lower speeds, saving fuel. Energy is harnessed during braking and stored for use when accelerating or driving at slow speeds. Dunn Lumber’s truck is a Class 7 with a payload of up to 16,000 lbs. It’s powered by a PACCAR PX-6, 240 hp engine and also features an integral transmission-mounted motor/generator, frame-mounted 340-volt battery and a power management system.
