TRURO, N.S. – The Truckers’ Association of Nova Scotia (TANS) had its 2002 annual meeting and convention, and a good one it was.

“Overall the convention was very good, very positive, very upbeat and very informative to the executive of the truckers association,” says executive director Dave Roberts.

Including walk-ins, approximately 350 people attended the weekend event held at the Glengarry Best Western in Truro.

“The numbers were really good,” says Roberts. “For the amount of people participating the numbers were the same, the actual attendance for the general meeting was probably down about five per cent.”

Roberts explains this time of year truckers are putting in some vacation time before the roads open hence the slight drop.

Elections for all of Cape Breton County, two counties and the mainland, were held on Saturday. Three members ran for two positions. Long time director Jerry Anderson of Inverness received a three-year term while Robert Sutherland of Richmond County received the two-year term. Both will serve in area one with Anderson concentrating on Victoria, Inverness and the mainland and Sutherland will mainly look after Sydney and Richmond Counties. Gordy MacDonald was thanked for his interest and participation.

“All of our directors work together. If Jerry can’t make it then Robert will take his place,” says Roberts.

The executive committee has otherwise remained the same with Dave Roberts at the helm as executive director. Area one directors are Jerry Anderson, Gordon Zinck, president of Antigonish and Robert Sutherland. Area two directors are Brian Smith, vice-chair, Bill Dowe secretary/treasurer, and David Meehan. Area three directors are Donald Whynot, chair/ president Queens County, Brady Hennigar, president Lunenburg, James Height, president Annapolis County.
