AKRON, Ohio – Goodyear’s fuel-efficient Fuel Max tires have received a nod from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Goodyear claims its tires using Fuel Max technology deliver up to a 4% improvement in fuel economy. When used with other EPA-approved equipment, the tires can help achieve a fuel savings of 4,000 gallons of diesel per year, resulting in a savings of US$11,000 annually, Goodyear and EPA have announced. Steer, drive and trailer tires as well as retreads are all included in the Fuel Max line.

“Obviously we’re pleased that these Goodyear tires are recognized for their fuel-efficiency by the EPA,” said Steve McClellan, vice-president, commercial tire systems.

While Goodyear claims its Fuel Max tires are 4% better than its other over-the-road tires, it points out independent SAE testing has shown an 8% improvement. The SAE tests factor in real-world testing variables such as terrain, driving styles and idle-time.
