SAINT JOHN, N.B. – Truck drivers beware, the next cop that nails you for speeding may well be a Robocop if the Canadian Bar Association gets its way.
The national lawyers’ association is calling on New Brunswick to bring in photo radar as an effective way to control automobile insurance costs.
The electronic speed trap is among some 40 measures the lawyers’ group is calling for to bring down rising insurance premiums in the province.
The hard-to-spot photo radar devices photograph and read the licence plates of speeders – tickets are then mailed to the vehicle owner.
Whether the devices are unpopular or not, the association says studies indicate when a region employs photo radar, accident rates drop dramatically, which saves lives.
