Incentives: Incentives that yield results
Tips for Successful Incentive Programs (from Ray Barton’s workshop Making Incentive Programs Work, June 2001):
1. strong management commitment
2. rewards focused on end results (i.e. not having an accident)
3. attractive rewards
4. progressive accumulation of credits
5. simple rules
6. short time frames for rewards
7. rewards/bonuses seen as equitable and attainable
8. enhance peer pressure
9. consult with drivers when designing the program – a team approach typically generates far better results than a ‘top-down’ strategy imposed by management, and one of the keys to success is drivers who genuinely want to participate
10. beware of negative side effects, like under-reporting of minor accidents in a safety incentive program
11. extend incentives to different levels in your organization
13. evaluate, update and refine the program regularly n
