International Truck and Engine Corp. and Eaton Corp. have been selected to manufacture diesel-electric hybrid trucks for a US program serving the utility industry.

The program will test a minimum of 20 factory-built International utility trucks with an integrated hybrid powertrain jointly developed by the two companies.

Both companies believe that diesel-electric hybrid technology holds significant promise. If the pilot program is successful, International says it’s prepared to produce diesel-electric hybrid trucks as early as 2006.
