LAS VEGAS, Nev. – International has resurrected the PAYSTAR name in its new 5000-series trucks which the company says “weigh less and haul more.”
The company made the announcement at the World of Concrete show, where it also introduced a new lightweight mixer package. The new package allows customers to haul more payload while still meeting federal bridge formula limits, the company says.
“The return of the PAYSTAR name and the launch of the new lightweight mixer package illustrates that International is a truck manufacturer that really listens to its customers,” said Bill Sixsmith, director of marketing for International’s severe service vehicle center.
“International is delivering the trucks our customers need to their jobs done faster and more efficiently.”
Much of the weight shaved from the new International PAYSTAR can be attributed to the introduction of a new engine offering – the Cummins ISL with 350 hp.
The truck also boasts a lightweight design and 12-inch frame, allowing customers to haul 10 yards of concrete legally – a 7.5 per cent payload increase over the previous International 5500 design, International officials said.
The PAYSTAR 5600 model can legally haul 11 yards, which is a 6.8 per cent increase in payload capacity.
The McNeilus Revolution Barrel weighs about 2,000 lbs less than other types of barrels, further increasing the new truck’s payload.
The PAYSTAR also features aluminum wheels and hubs and a centrifuge drum to keep the overall weight of the truck low.
“This efficient new vehicle will allow for additional payload, with the same strength, durability, and reliability International customers have come to expect,” said Sixsmith.
“And we all know increased payload means more money for owners and drivers.”
The PAYSTAR name will be familiar to trucking veterans. It was introduced in the 1970s to describe International’s severe service trucks and tractors.
“Known for its legendary performance, the PAYSTAR was used all over the world for decades,” International officials said. “Many customers associated the PAYSTAR name with the personality of the International trucks – a star on the construction field that carried tonnes of payload with ease.”
The PAYSTAR moniker remained until 1998 when the trucks were renamed the 5000 Series – a series that included the 5500, 5600 and 5900 models.
“We have a number of customers who still refer to our 5000 Series trucks as PAYSTAR long after we removed the badging,” said Sixsmith.
“The International PAYSTAR name is what the customers want to see on the sides of their trucks. It also ties in to International’s operating company name of Navistar.”
International recently announced it will be naming its new 2007 Class 8 tractor the ProStar.
